A Coily Girl’s Guide to Summer Ready Protective Styling

A Coily Girl’s Guide to Summer Ready Protective Styling

Summer has finally pulled up on us so it’s time to get our protective style looks togetha while keepin’ the kinks soft, moisturized and healthy. whateva you’ve got planned whether you’re hitting the day party, chillin’ poolside or jet settin to Bali for baecation we've got you covered with essential tips to keep your hair thriving in this heat.

prep up
allow me to state the obvious but you gotta prep your hair before you install your protective style. what you wanna do is start with a clean base, by thoroughly cleansing your hair and scalp with a moisturizing shampoo. this is a must because to help prevent buildup and breakage.

deep divin
summer sun can be A LOT on our 4C coils, so deep conditioning is an absolute must chille.
so if you haven’t already, find yourself a thicke and creamy deep conditioner to give your hair a hydration boost.  summer heat can strip your hair of its natural moisture, leaving it dry and brittle. the most effective way to replenish and retain moisture so keeping your hair hydrated and resilient is essential

pro tip: right before you instal your protective style, deep condition with with a plastic cap and wrap it in a warm towel for extra penetration and softness.

stay thirsty
healthy hair starts from the inside. drink lots of water to keep your body and hair hydrated. It’s one of the simplest ways to ensure your 4C coils stay soft and lush while tucked away in your protective style.

during the dog days of summer our bodies tend to lose a lot more water through sweat which can potentially lead to dehydration.  and umm dehydrated hair is ultimately dry hair which makes it easy to break and that aint cute.

also, when your kinks are dehydrated, blood flow to your hair follicles slows down and starves the hair follicle of necessary nutrients. focus on maintaining the moisture balance in your hair by drinking a lot of water.

☀️ - wow! youre good! for the next clue, check out the description of our in too deep bundle and look for somethin that symbolizes moisture!

pro tip: drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day.

mo moisture, mo moisture
we love a good moisture lock. before styling generously moisturize with a leave in to keep your coils soft and manageable. a real good leave in can act as a protective barrier, lock up moisture, and shield kinks from the damaging effects of heat and UV rays.

pro tip: using a proper leave in helps with elasticity, which prevents breakage and split ends that can be caused by the heat. long story short, don’t skip this one for sure!

dont skip the refresh
even with a thorough protective style prep, your hair needs a routine refresh. Refresh your style with a refresher spray or a cute lil DIY mix to keep them looking fresh for as long as you realistically can. & umm emphasis on realistic, don’t drag it past 8 weeks. ideally its time for a take down around weeks 4-6.

pro tip: refresh weekly with a liquid poo, leave in and a really good hair serum.

wrap it up
before you lay down always use protection (no pun intended lol). use your silk or satin scarf or bonnet every night to reduce friction and keep your style intact. A silk pillowcase is optimal if your scarf or bonnet slides off on you at night.

well...simple enough? we sure hope so because we love when the girlies step out with their protective styles, so an easy guide to help yall keep it together for the summer was a must.
